Position Overview:  The Director of Education works for the national office and is responsible for the quality of educational programming at BELL.  The Director serves the Quality Assurance and Program Implementation Functions and manages the Curriculum & Instruction Manager, Evaluation & Assessment Manager, and the National Program Manager. 

 

Responsibilities:

 

Oversee the development of high quality programs for BELL’s target population(s).  This includes:

  • Driving continuous improvement of existing BELL programs by developing strategic partnerships, synthesizing research and best practices in the field, and using program evaluative data to form program and organizational recommendations for improvement;
  • Overseeing development of new BELL programs (e.g., parent and alumni programs) to balance BELL’s educational consistency with our mission to build leadership, self-esteem and parent advocacy and to respond to the needs of our scholars; and
  • Working to ensure that all children receive access to high quality programs by disseminating the BELL model and outcomes to broad national audiences.

 

Ensure consistently high quality program implementation across BELL sites nationally. 

  • Work closely with functional managers within the division to ensure program elements are designed to support scale. 
  • Work closely to coordinate functional managers’ efforts with that of the Training Department so that teachers, tutors, Site Managers, and other program-related staff have the skills and resources to consistently implement the program. 
  • Oversee and participate in quality assurance efforts, including conducting site visits and providing feedback to BELL managers, for continuously improving service delivery. 
  • Capture and disseminate program-related best practices from the field. 
  • Support program replication at new sites.  Provide technical assistance to new and existing sites as needed.

 

Provide leadership and strategic direction for the program division. 

  • Lead the National education team including the following managers and their direct reports: Manager of Curriculum & Instruction, Manager of Assessment & Evaluation, National Program Manager. 
  • Inspire, challenge, align and develop the team, providing instructional leadership. 
  • Develop and manage balance strategies to support the organization’s annual objectives. 

 

Deliver on our academic performance objectives

  • Drive resolution of program-related issues in the field. 
  • Continuously monitor performance data and provide immediate intervention. 
  • Identify key initiatives for the program division to support the needs of the field. 

 

Support the work of BELL

  • Inform program and organizational objectives and measurement, working closely with the general management division to report metrics. 
  • Support development and expansion opportunities as needed. 
  • Work with relevant directors to package the program for sales, marketing, and new business development purposes. 

 

 

 

Qualifications:

 

Demonstrated commitment to improving urban schools and building educated leaders for life, driving education reform.

Masters degree or PhD in education or related fields.  Strategic thinker with proven ability to execute effectively against strategy; ability to produce results.  Experience in managing and coaching in varied instructional strategies.  Considerable skill in directing the work of others and resolving complex problems.  Significant experience in educational program design, development and/or implementation in diverse communities.  Experience supporting programming in a multi-site context (preferably multi-region context).  Comfortable with fast growth, flexible roles, and building for scale. Success as a team player and collaborator.  Experience with planning curriculum development.  Experience with developing and/or implementing assessment systems including benchmark assessments.  Expertise in or experience with literacy and leadership programs.
