BELL JOB ANNOUNCEMENT: REGIONAL DIRECTOR - DETROIT
Title: Regional Director - Detroit Locations: Detroit Reports To: Chief Strategy Officer
Position Overview: The Regional Director is responsible for all aspects of managing the 2008 summer program for 5-8 school sites within Detroit. This includes responsibility for the quality of the operations by creating and managing benchmarks for success and achieving annual goals in accordance with BELL national guidelines. Work with BELL National to develop and implement an after-school entry strategy for 2008-2009.
Responsibilities: · Work with Chief Strategy Officer (CSO) to develop Detroit entry strategy beginning with a summer partnership with National Heritage Academies (NHA) · Summer 2008: · Serve as primary local liaison with National Heritage Academies to launch a successful summer 2008 program at 5-8 sites serving 750 scholars. · Meet with NHA principals to develop a plan for each school to enroll targeted numbers of scholars. · Work with Director of Enrollment at BELL National to develop marketing materials and see that BELL summer is promoted at each site. Coordinate the efforts of Parent Ambassadors at each site to sign up scholars. · Host parent orientations at each site and ensure that all BELL enrollment forms are completed and sent to BELL’s data entry center for processing. · Learn and use the BELL Scholar and Tutor modules to track enrollment and recruitment efforts. · Work with principals and NHA Service Center to develop and implement a teacher recruitment process. With the support of BELL National Recruitment, host job fairs and interviews for teachers. See that all paperwork is completed and submitted to HR · Hire and manage a local recruiter to do outreach to college students with the goal of hiring 35-40 college students for summer 2008 and 40-50 for the fall of 2008. · Identify and book field trips and guest speakers for each school for 4 Fridays. Arrange transportation to and from each field trip. · Support CSO and Development team in approaching local funders and hosting site visits during program. · Complete summer preparation tasks as identified on the summer controlling calendar to prepare for site opening. · Ensure excellent educational programming for scholars in all elementary schools hosting a BELL program. · Partner with Human Resources to recruit and hire Site Managers. · Work with Director of Training to manage local training events. · Manage 5-8 Site Managers; responsible for up to 750 scholars and a part-time staff of up to 125 Teachers/Tutors for the summer 2008 partnership with National Heritage Academies. · Meet with foundations, other non-profits and intermediary groups to support fund-raising efforts. · After-school 2008-2009: · Work closely with Chief Strategy officer to develop plans to provide a fee-for-service-school opportunity in Detroit with NHA. · Meet with principals to secure sites. · Hire and manage up Site Managers, that could grow from 1 site with 150 scholars to multiple sties and up to 1250 scholars and a part-time staff of up to 150 Teachers/Tutors in future years. · Day-to-day operations: · Supervise, coach and evaluate all reporting employees; inspire staff and problem-solve creative solutions to daily challenges. · Build and manage highly effective relationships with school principals, school districts, community organizations, universities and parents; make bi-weekly on-site visits to support Site Manager; communicate with schools as necessary and insure quality of service and staff. · Manage financial accounts and reporting systems including P&Ls, teaching staff ratios, scholar enrollment goals, attendance percentages, etc. · Develop strategies for improving the running of each site and hold Site Managers accountable to the highest standards of site management. · Deliver high quality services at established levels defined by outcomes and at established volume levels (i.e. # of scholars) each program year. · Ensure 100% of scholars achieve proficiency in reading, literacy, and math. · Participate as a trainer in selected BELL programs and conduct trainings with Site Managers as appropriate. · Meet with principals at least two times per year to insure good relations, identify areas of improvement and retain as school partner year to year. · Contribute to Program Development as appropriate, including involvement with Directors of Education, COO, CEO as necessary. · Manage, facilitate and obtain resources to insure efficient day-to-day operations at each site. · Develop and implement programs to insure high retention of school partners, Site Managers, Tutors and scholars. · Train and manage to operating assumptions and performance metrics. · Develop and execute annual strategies using the balance framework and organizational objectives. · Develop and manage to annual operating budgets. · Ensure that BELL –operations adhere to all regulatory, program and funding compliance requirements. · Participate in cross functional meetings and communicate input between meeting participants and your regional team. · Perform other duties as assigned by Chief Operating Officer.
Qualifications:
A BA or Masters in Education, Social Work, Business; Minimum ten years experience in education or related field managing a multi-site operation with a full-time and large part-time workforce. Experience with educational programming and school partnerships a plus. Operations management experience should include budget responsibility, P&L analysis, business plans and payroll. Knowledge of the Detroit school district and non-profit community, in particular foundations and corporate giving programs.
