Keeping cozy: Ebeny Vance, 9, and Nylea Pierrelites, 7, participants in the Building Leaders for Life program, admire the new winter coats they received from Operation Warmth at the Mattahunt School in Mattapan.

Hundreds of Hub students in an after-school program received a gift Tuesday that warmed both their hearts and bodies.

More than 700 students in the Building Educated Leaders for Life program, known as BELL, were given brand-new coats from Operation Warm, a charity funded by Bank of America.

"Many may not even have had warm coats for the winter season," said BELL spokesman Collin Earnst. "A new coat is really a source of self-esteem."

The young scholars, as the BELL program calls its participants, are in kindergarten through sixth grade and attend six different schools in Roxbury, Dorchester and Mattapan.

"They were thrilled to have them," Earnst said.
