At eleven years old, when Kourtney Lewis first enrolled in BELL’s summer program, her mother Leta described her as reserved and insecure.  Leta encouraged Kourtney to excel in all her endeavors, but had yet to find the key to unlock her enormous potential.

Kourtney’s performance in elementary school had been anything but stellar.  Unsure of herself and not motivated to succeed, Kourtney was identified to participate in her school's special education program for remedial learners.  Leta, along with Kourtney's teachers and tutors at BELL, knew Kourtney could excel and exceed her own expectations, so together they helped her realize and reach her potential.

After one summer of hard work, good instruction, and encouragement from strong mentors, Kourtney made significant strides the following school year.  Determined to improve her skills and excel in school, she was removed from special education and enrolled in advanced middle school courses.  Her grades and writing skills earned her a spot in a college-preparatory program that provides a college scholarship and adult mentor for participants.

As an eighth grader, Kourtney was elected president of her class, and in 2006 she was recognized by Metropolitan Council for Educational Opportunity (METCO) for earning the highest grade point average of all students in the Greater Boston area program.  She aspires to attend Stanford University and become a practicing attorney working on behalf of social justice.
